Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treatment

Generalized anxiety disorder is often treated successfully without drugs by using psychotherapy. The patient is led by the therapist into identifying the source of the anxiety. Once the patient understands the symbolic meanings that his subconscious has associated with past events, he can be helped to break the automatic chain reaction or sometimes called automatic thoughts that bring on the symptoms of anxiety.

Other forms of treatment besides talk therapy is the use of behavioral modification techniques that can include all or some of the following: muscle relaxation techniques, meditation rituals, behavioral modification biofeedback and automatic thoughts interference training.

The use of drugs is most often the treatment of preference since the relief is immediate and the expense is only for the cost of the drug. These drugs like buspirone give the patient immediate easing of anxiety symptoms and are not addictive. However, since the source of the anxiety has not been dealt with, the anxiety will return. Patients with more serious depression symptoms are usually treated with benzodiazepines that can become addictive if used for long term relief of generalized anxety disorder.

Some doctors prefer to treat generalized anxiety disorders with sedating antidepressants if the patient is not also suffering from depression. With depression and generalized anxiety disorder, the use of sedating or non sedating antidepressants can worsen the attacks of anxiety mixed with depression and lead to more serious consequences for the patient. The most effective treatment although the costliest in time and use of therapist is non pharmacological therapies as mentioned.
